Toward the end of the introduction Hawthorne lists, in French, some of L’Aubépine’s works. Some refer to actual works by Hawthorne and some are fanciful titles. Finally, he states that “Rappaccini’s Daughter” is a translation of L’Aubépine’s “Beatrice; ou la Belle Empoisonneuse” (“Beatrice, or the Beautiful Poisoner”).

Of course, the pen name L’Aubépine is as transparent as air, so Hawthorne was just having a bit of fun. In fact, it is also stated in the U S Magazine that “Rappaccini’s Daughter” is by Nathaniel Hawthorne. It should be added that the appellation L’Aubépine (i. e. the hawthorn shrub) is à propos for a story in which a garden filled with plants, albeit poisonous ones, figures so prominently. When “Rappaccini’s Daughter” was republished in the 1846 edition of Mosses From an Old Manse it was printed without the header and introduction, but both were included in the 1854 edition of the anthology.

Hawthorne’s legacy, presented under his own name, includes wonderful short stories, which were collected in volumes such as Twice-Told Tales (1837) and Mosses From an Old Manse (1846) and important novels such as The Scarlet Letter (1850) and The House of Seven Gables (1851).

Nathaniel Hawthorne was a serious-minded writer, but his use of M. de L’Aubépine as a pseudonym reveals that he also enjoyed a good jest.
